HS Specialty Programs
LBUSD's Specialized High School Preparatory Programs
Not all high schools are alike. Not every high school has the best programs for a particular student!
Take a look at a few of the specialized learning communities offered to students in Long Beach-area high schools:
- Cabrillo has specialized programs in Global Logistics (AGL, co-sponsored by the Port of Long Beach), Law and Justice (CALJ), Engineering & Design (CED), University Scholarship, and Computer Media, Arts, and Animation (SACMAA).
- Jordan has programs in Medical Services (AIMS), and Architecture, Construction, and Engineering (ACE), as well as the Internetional Baccalaureate Program (IB).
- Lakewood has programs in Digital Media Arts and Communications (DMAC), Health Occupations & Sports Medicine (HOSM), and Aquatic Biosphere Management (Odyssey Academy), as well as an Applied Technology Magnet Program and Merit Scholars Program.
- Millikan has the COMPASS program (Community of Musicians, Performers, Artists, and Social Scientists) and a Business Academy (MBA), as well as programs in Eco-Friendly Engineering and Technology (GREEN Academy), Computer Science (MIT), Career & College Prep (PEACE), and Gifted & Talented Students (QUEST).
- Long Beach Polytechnic has a Medical Academy (MEDS), International Studies Program (Center for International Curriculum - CIC), Career Preparation Academy (Pacific Rim), and a University Readiness Program (PACE).
- Wilson has a comprehensive General Liberal Arts / College Prep Program (WAVE), plus specialty coursework in Performing and Visual Arts, Environmental Affairs, Leadership and Public Service, Medicine and Biotechnology, and Information and Communication Technology.
- Browning, the newest High School in Long Beach--just opened!--has a facility and coursework designed around the Hospitality Tourism and Recreation industries.
- CAMS (California Academy of Math and Science) coursework far exceeds University of California admission requirements, and recruits students into engineering and biotechnology projects that connect with outside internship opportunities.
- McBride is a comprehensive non-sports high-school that offers career-focused pathways in Engineering, Health-Medical, and Criminal Justice and Investigation, organized with help from business leaders in companies such as Boeing, the Port of Long Beach, and Molina Health Care.
- Renaissance has courses in the performing arts, with classes such as Costuming, Jazz Band, Ceramics, Theater, Dance, and Stage Tech, including coursework in stage and screen writing, music technology, and visual arts and design.
- Sato Academy is a comprehensive non-sports high-school with a STEM focus (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics), and Project Lead the Way (PLTW) pathways in Engineering and Biomedical Science.
